Family businesses make up around 60% of all European companies and the North West is home to many, from Bruntwood and Warburtons to Robinsons Brewery and Timpson. The majority however are SMEs, in particular micro-enterprises with fewer than ten employees.

We work with  a wide range of family owned and run businesses in Greater Manchester each having their own specific characteristics and challenges, both in the start up phase and as they grow and expand.

From salaries and the ownership structure to working hours and finding customers, there are constant decisions to be made which will need to be agreed by everyone involved.  But building a family business can also be an incredibly rewarding and inclusive experience and something to build on for generations to come.

Last year we helped mother and daughter team Shirley and Amy Darby to launch a café and artistic community hub with a Start Up Loan.  Darby’s Coffee and Arts Lounge on Flixton Road in Urmston specialises in using locally sourced ingredients and products including cakes, specialist teas, sandwiches and homemade soups. The venue has also established itself as an artistic hub for the town, displaying and selling pictures and photographs by local artists, promoting the music of local musicians by playing their demo CDs and selling handcrafted gifts including cards and jewellery.

Amy said: “Setting up a family business was very exciting for us both but we knew we needed that extra bit of help to get up and running. The team at Business Finance Solutions were able to help us secure the Start Up Loan and are continuing to work with us on our plans to expand our services including offering outside catering for business conferences and parties and helping us to create more jobs as we grow.”
